Description:
2800 P Street Richmond, Virginia 37º32'11" N, 77º24'38" W The Fourth African Baptist Church was organized by 23 slaves in Richmond on June 26, 1859. After emancipation the church was reorganized on December 2, 1865 as the Fourth Baptist Church. The building pictured here was constructed in 1884. The Educational Wing, shown at right and which was added in the mid-20th century, was designed by Ethel Furman, the first known African American female architect in Virginia. Though her father was the second licensed Black building contractor in Richmond, she was not recognized for some of her work until after her lifetime. In 1985 Richmond's Ethel Bailey Furman Park was named for her, and in 2010 she was honored as one of the Library of Virginia's "Virginia Women in History."
