Description:
400 Libbie Avenue Richmond, Virginia 37º34'29" N, 77º31'5" W In 1937 Joseph Ukrop opened his first food market on Hull Street in Richmond. That market grew into a city-wide chain of full sized grocery stores which were sold to a Dutch company in 2010 and renamed Martin's. Meanwhile, in August 2001 this smaller store was opened by the Ukrop family and named Joe's Market in honor of the patriarch. With the sale in 2010 the Dutch company did not buy this store and so it was slated for closure. There was a public outcry and two former Ukrop employees bought the store and reopened it under its new name in February of that year. Prior to 2001 there was said to be a CVS Pharmacy and possibly a Lukhard's grocery located here.
