Description:
700 N. 26th Street Richmond, Virginia 37º32'6" N, 77º24'53" W Built in 1850, this structure was first home to Springfield Division #167 of the Sons of Temperance. It was also used by various fraternal organizations, but in June 1861 and with the Civil War, the Soldiers' Aid Society in association with Trinity Methodist and Leigh Street Baptist churches converted it to General Hospital #26, also known as Springfield Hall Hospital. Such medical service may have been intermittent however because 1863 newspaper notices advertise temperance meetings there on Thursday evenings, complete with promises of "interesting speakers." With the end of the Civil War the building reverted to its usual variety of names: Springfield Hall, Temperance Hall, and Springfield Temperance Hall. From 1869-1874 the Richmond public school system rented space there for overflow classes from Valley School, a school for African-American children in the segregated school system. As such it was called Springfield (Temperance) Hall School. Beginning with the 1874-75 school year, the black children were out and white children were in, their being overflow from the Bellevue School. To further complicate matters, in 1880 a school opened in the next block south on North 26th Street, this new school was named Springfield, and the rented space at Springfield (Temperance) Hall School was given up. But by 1883-84 additional space was needed and so for $15 a month a room was again rented in Springfield (Temperance) Hall for two halfday schools for young children. A stone set in the brickwork on the upper front of this building is inscribed "Christ Church 1940". In the 1942 Richmond city directory the church is listed simply as "Christ's" under the Holiness denomination. A 1964 publication reported that the building still housed a (unnamed) church. Today the building is part of a City of Richmond senior center.
