Richmond, Virginia
(inherited from collection) - Description:
- 608 N. 26th Street Richmond, Virginia 37º32'3" N, 77º24'54" W This building, opened in 1913 as the Springfield School, sits on land that previously housed an earlier school of the same name. That earlier school, which opened November 11, 1880, was demolished to make way for the present structure. In Richmond's segregated school system, Springfield School was initially for white students. In 1948 the school was "converted" into a school for African-Americans and renamed Bowler School in honor of John Andrew Bowler, a respected African-American civic leader, minister (first pastor of Mount Olivet Baptist Church), and teacher (East End/George Mason Schools). In 1972 Bowler School was changed from an elementary school to a middle school until 1975 when the students were transferred to East End and Bacon Schools. At that time Bellevue School students, displaced by a renovation of their school, were moved to Bowler for two years. In 1979 Bowler was declared to be surplus property. R-CAP (which may stand for Richmond Community Action Program?) then used the building for some years. It has now been converted into apartments for low-income seniors.
