(inherited from collection) - Description:
- 1700 W. Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 37º33'19" N, 77º27'30" W Sauer's, the spice company founded in Richmond in 1887 and headquartered in this city ever since, has owned this building since about 1981. Last summer the company promised a local television station reporter that they would soon clean up the area around the building, but today it remains as trashy as ever. For years many people have thought the building was abandoned, but Sauer actually has been using it all along for shipping operations. They are making improvements to other properties in the area and promise they'll renovate this building also. Most Richmond residents know this building as the Sears department store, it being Sears' third location after they moved from 312 E. Broad Street, and 201 W. Broad Street before that. This building was constructed between 1946 and 1949.
