Description:
2201 E. Franklin Street Richmond, Virginia 37º31'54" N, 77º25'24" W On the wall of what was once a loading dock for this building there is a plaque that reads "1908. F.H. Garber." While it's obvious what that should mean, the facts are less clear. The first entry I find in city directories for this address is 1903, reading "Gallaher of Great Britain and Ireland (Ltd), tobacco." That company is resident there until at least 1910, but then the address disappears from city directories for several decades. In 1975, Garbers of Richmond, which deals primarily in overhead doors, moved into the building. (Their website states that the building had been vacant for 20 years.) In 2017 Garbers of Richmond moved to another location and the building was converted to apartments. As for the person F.H. Garber, he showed some signs of civic activity in the very early 20th century, serving on a committee that dealt with water issues. He also owned a fair amount of property off Williamsburg Road, south of what is now Powhatan Playground. There is now a Garber Street in that neighborhood.
