(inherited from collection) - Description:
- 900 Terminal Place Richmond, Virginia 37º33'46" N, 77º28'4" W Southern Biscuit Company (aka Southern Biscuit Works) built the tower portion of this building in 1927, using it as their headquarters and main production facility. Raw materials were lifted to the sixth floor, formed into cookies and crackers and baked in a two-story oven that spanned the fifth and sixth floors. These products were then lowered to the basement where they were cooled and packed for shipping. In 1939 Southern Biscuit became the first officially licensed baker of Girl Scout cookies and at about the same time changed its branding to "Famous Foods of Virginia," hence the FFV sign on the top of the building. The wings emanating from the tower were added in the 1940s and '50s. Corporate conglomeration eventually yielded the name Interbake Foods/FFV and by the 1980s Interbake Foods was the third largest producer of cookies and crackers in North America. In 2006 the company moved to Warren County from this faciltiy, which then sat empty until 2013 when the conversion to lofts began. Tenants began moving in the next year.
