The photo was taken from an elevated position looking east along Main Street towards Church Hill. On the left is the Old Customs House, the only unburned structure at the foot of Capitol Hill. Given the angle the photographer was likely standing on the roof of an unburned structure on the south side of Main Street about two or three blocks west of the Customs House. Only one block in this area was largely unburned: the block bounded by Main, Cary, 8th, and 9th. The photographer was likely standing on the roof of a building at the northeast corner of this block, or not far away from there.
