Description:
404 Strawberry Street Richmond, Virginia established 1974 37º33'22" N, 77º28'2" W Most Richmonders who know about Scuffletown Park are residents who live near it, and that's because, though the park has a street address, it has no street frontage. The park, formally established by the city in 1974, is accessible only by the alleys behind the homes of the city block outlined by Strawberry Street, Park Avenue, North Stafford Avenue, and Stuart Avenue. Since park access is via alleys, the winter time view is marred by lots of household trash cans and recycling bins as well as utility poles, but I'm sure it looks better other times of the year when leafy trees and shrubs provide camouflage. The central portion of the park does look nice year-round, thanks to a friends group that convinced the city to renovate the park in 2004. Nowadays there's a community garden at one end of the park, at Christmas there's a big light show, occasionally there are musical events, and finally there are neighborhood businesses that provide eats for a steady stream of people who want to enjoy lunch outdoors. Before 1974? There were abandoned cars and a dilapidated barn that had once been home to the city's mounted police horses. Before that? The name reportedly came from a nearby establishment called Scuffletown Tavern, which was itself named for a 1781 skirmish between locals and British troops.
