Description:
2500 W. Broad Street Richmond, Virginia building opened as a railway station in January, 1919 37º33'40" N, 77º27'57" W Built as the Broad Street Station (or Union Station) for the Richmond, Fredericksburg, and Potomac Railroad and the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad, the architect was John Russell Pope, who also designed the Jefferson Memorial, the National Archives, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C. This was the first domed central railroad station in the nation, and it served Richmond's passenger train needs until November 1975 when Amtrak moved operations to the new station on Staples Mill Road. In 1976 the Commonwealth of Virginia purchased the building and in January 1977 the Science Museum of Virginia's first permanent exhibit gallery was opened. As a science museum the dome now suspends a pendulum which swings in the lobby of the building. There's also a nifty little coffee shop just off the lobby.
