Description:
900 N. Lombardy Street Richmond, Virginia 37º33'17" N, 77º27'17" W Some sources state that this building was built in 1880 for the R.A. Patterson Tobacco Company and was sold in the early 20th century to Export Leaf Tobacco Company, a subsidiary of British-American Tobacco Company. According to Salmon's Historic Photos of Richmond , however, the building was constructed in 1914, and a portion of it occupied by British-American in 1917. Baist's 1889 atlas of Richmond does not show the building, and shows that general area of the city to be only partially built up. The 1900 Richmond city directory lists R.A. Patterson Tobacco Company at 327-333 S. 7th. That directory also has no listing of the address of 900 N. Lombardy. The first city directory that does list 900 N. Lombardy is 1914, which gives the occupant as Export Leaf Tobacco Company. Clearly, Salmon's book gives the correct date. In any case, with World War II the federal government dispersed many of its Washington, D.C. offices; the U.S. Patent Office moved its operations into this building from February 1942 until the middle of 1946 when they returned to Washington. After the war the building served for a time as an armed forces induction center and as a Veteran's Administration facility. The building sat empty from 1956 until 1976 when U-Haul, as part of their Adaptive Reuse program, bought it from Export Leaf. Kudos to U-Haul.
