Description:
1635 W. Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 37º33'17" N, 77º27'27" W A photograph which is mounted on the wall inside Mobelux is described with the following: The Great Fire Julien Binford, charcoal on paper, 1942 In 1942, as part of a national effort to place original art in U.S. Post Offices, Richmond-area artist Julien Binford (1909-1997) was commissioned by the Works Progress Administration to create a mural for the newly built Saunders Station. He envisioned a moment in Richmond history—the evacuation of the city as Union troops advanced in 1865. The Richmond Times-Dispatch printed Binford's original charcoal sketch, and an outcry began. According to the public, the mural was not only indecent, it brought up a history that the citizens of Richmond at that time would rather forget. The project was delayed until the onset of World War II halted all funding. [sic] Mobelux arranged for a full-scale rendering of Julien Binford's original sketch to be displayed here in Saunders Station, where it always belonged.
