(inherited from collection) - Description:
- 814-816 W. Broad Street Richmond, Virginia 37º32'59" N, 77º26'55" W The Richmond and Chesapeake Bay Railway was incorporated in 1905 by Frank Jay Gould, son of the New York financier, Jay Gould. The plan was to provide high-speed electric rail service from Norfolk to Fredericksburg, and operations began in 1907 with the completion of the five mile segment between Richmond and Lakeside, extended later that year nine more miles to Ashland. Due to economic difficulties and the rise of the automobile, however, that's all that was ever completed. The company limped along until it was dissolved in 1938. After the railway, this building was used by Richmond Glass Company for almost 50 years. In April 2014 it reopened as space for VCU's School of the Arts, and was christened The Depot.
