Richmond, Virginia
(inherited from collection) - Description:
- 3500 W. Cary Street Richmond, Virginia 37º33'20" N, 77º29'11" W Before the 1840s Cary Street was called River Road and it was the main stagecoach route from Richmond to Charlottesville. River Road being parallel to the James River, George Washington would have used it as he supervised the construction of the Kanawha Canal. Later, Thomas Jefferson and his new bride made their way to Monticello on this road after being married at Berkeley Plantation. In the 1840s and '50s the road was a toll road called Westham Plank Road. Tolls require toll collectors; the collector for this road lived in this house, reportedly built in 1841. Now with the imminent demolition of Richmond Shopping Center, the future of this house looks dim. There is a petition to save it called "Help Save Carytown Burgers & Fries" at change.org
