- 1001 W. Grace Street Richmond, Virginia 37º33'3" N, 77º27'11" W The Village Cafe first opened in 1956 near this, its third location on the edge of Virginia Commonwealth University's Monroe Campus. Though not always under the same ownership, the second location was also nearby. All locations have been in the middle of off-campus student life, beginning with beat poets in the 1950s, hippies in the 1960s and '70s, skateboarders and whatever afterward. More recently, the area tried out a Walmart mini-store, but word now is that that store will be closed.
