(inherited from collection) - Description:
- Virginia Electric and Power Company 1201 Haxall Point Richmond, Virginia 37°32'2" N 77°26'13" W This smokestack is attached to the shell of a building that was once a hydroelectric generating plant for Virginia Electric and Power Company. Built in 1899, the plant supplied electricity to downtown Richmond until 1955, when operations began a ten-year phase-out. In 1969 Hurricane Camille ensured the permanent closure of the structure. For now the interior walls of the building shell are used as canvases for large public murals. The hope for some years now has been that someone will eventually reconstruct the building and attract restaurants and other commercial spaces.
