- Penny Lane Pub & Restaurant 421 E. Franklin Street Richmond, Virginia 37°32'28.5" N 77°26'21.2" W Looking through my YouTube feed a few days ago, I noticed "Davy Jones Talks about the Beatles." It was only a 4½ minute video, undated but uploaded in 2013, and I knew Davy Jones from his time in the Monkees, so I clicked. Imagine my surprise when at the 1:00 minute mark he mentions that he goes to a pub here in Richmond called Penny Lane. I had never heard of the Penny Lane pub and so I was doubly surprised to learn that after all these years it still exists, and here it is. Why did Davy Jones live in Richmond? I can only surmise that it was because of his close connection to horse racing (he trained as a jockey in his teenage years) and his association with Colonial Downs racetrack specifically. Colonial Downs is located just 25 miles east of Richmond.
