Black and white photograph showing Byrd Street (foreground) and the 4th Street overpass spanning the Downtown Expressway in Richmond, Virginia; view looking northeast; John Marshall Hotel and Second Presbyterian Church visible in distance (at left); warehouse buildings front highway. __The donor and photographer was trying to recreate views from a facsimile reprint of "Illustrated Guide to Richmond, The Confederate Capital" from the City Intelligencer of 1862. The images in this collection were rejects from the project.<br />This image is possibly referencing a wood engraving from a drawing by William L. Sheppard in Harper's Weekly (April 6, 1861) showing the Virginia State Armory at the foot of 5th Street near the James River and Kanawha Canal.
